5 Tips for Rocking a Public Speaking Gig

Nothing makes me want to master a new skill like falling on my face when I first attempt it. Halfway through my new hire presentation — a get-to-know-the-new-kid-over-beers tradition at IDEO Chicago — I cut my talk short and shamefully closed my laptop.

Far from the client presentations I had previously known, here, the emotional stakes were much higher. This was my personal story, and I was learning the hard way — in front of an audience of my new peers, no less — that I was clueless as to how I might frame a compelling narrative.

The Shapes of San Francisco

‘The Shapes of San Francisco’

From April 1 — July 9, 2017, I set out to explore the Shapes of San Francisco through a series of 100 daily photos.

While never explicitly intended to be dark in nature, the series was featured via Apple's #ShotoniPhone campaign on October 31, 2017. 🎃

IDEO's Beach Ball Synth

IDEO's Beach Ball Synth for Moogfest

I helped envision IDEO's giant ‘Play—Sound’ installation for the annual Moogfest music, art and technology festival in Durham, NC, in 2016. I also produced, directed, shot and edited a short film that follows our creation from assembly to appreciation.

Huge hat tip to my infinitely inspiring colleagues, Aaron Soloway, Diem Ho, and Peter Hyer, whose vision brought the interactive installation to life.

Walgreens Pharmacy Redesign

Redesigning the Walgreens Pharmacy Experience

IDEO created a new format for Walgreens pharmacies, with private consultation rooms, pharmacists out on the pharmacy floor, and Take Care clinics.

I led the digital prototyping effort for the project — from technology vetting to implementation and testing — crafting tablet, touchscreen and informational experiences throughout the two full-size pharmacy prototypes we created.

IDEO

Reimagining IDEO.COM

As IDEO continues to evolve, we set out to redesign our flagship web property by first asking ourselves, how should IDEO.com reflect our business today and support our evolution in the coming years? The four design principles that guided our work were that we lead with questions, celebrate our people, pare down the number of case studies we feature for greater focus and clarity, and make it easy for visitors to find what they are looking for, no matter their device.

I was a member of the core strategy, design, and build team for the project.

IDEO's Weekly Wow

‘Your Weekly WOW’

‘Your Weekly WOW’ is a much-beloved looking glass into the highlight-worthy moments that occur in IDEO's 9 locations across the globe. I pursued a strategy to use the mailing to introduce new content creation tools to our firm by reimagining the traditionally static document as interactive, web-based and device agnostic; specifically, one that leveraged the innumerable benefits granted web technologies over their more traditional counterparts.

I outfitted the Slides web presentation framework with custom JavaScript-powered SVG animations; videos; animated GIFs; beautiful web font pairings and corresponding color treatments; analytics; and a pair of embedded games, one touch-friendly for mobile viewers and another requiring keyboard input for desktop visitors.

My strategy proved fruitful. The responses and unique visitors to the internal site came from nearly everyone in the firm. Web-based presentation tools are now in heavy rotation across the company, and we even made a publicly-viewable version of my work for use in our cultural and marketing efforts.

Lima, Peru

Paletas De Color Peruana

Through an ongoing relationship between IDEO and Intercorp / La Victoria Lab, I had the pleasure to live and work in Lima, Peru, for the spring and summer of 2016. What struck me most about the country were the vibrant color palettes it presents at every turn; these are those I couldn't help but bring home with me.

Empathy and the Promise of Virtual Reality

I co-hosted a VR workshop at IDEO San Francisco with my impossibly talented colleague, Dav Rauch. I covered two approaches to ‎VR‬ prototyping, while Dav detailed his editorial and effects pipeline for VR content.

I wrote a piece detailing our thoughts on the promise of the technology, as well as a corresponding tutorial as a compliment to our workshop — complete with code samples — viewable on Github.

My niece, Olivia

Song for Olivia

When my niece, Olivia, was due for surgery, my brother, a composer and producer, wrote her a song. Not even a year old at the time, there was no way for Olivia to experience the music without help from her parents.

So, I teamed up with an IDEO colleague, Garrett, and we set out to solve the problem.

I created artwork to accompany the song and purchased a plush monkey and picture frame. We laser cut a new acrylic housing for the rear of the frame and picked up an Arduino, along with an RFID/NFC shield and MP3 player, and we got to work.

Luis and Me

Mentoring Luis

For the better part of a year, I mentored Luis, a 13-year old I first met through the Spark Program. I taught Luis about the design process, converting hand drawn illustration into vector assets, game logic and JavaScrpt, while he ensured that I had more homework than I could ever handle as he knocked out any and all lessons as quickly as I could prepare them each week.

Luis and I created a concept and demo for a mobile game with a ridiculous name. You can read about our efforts on the City of Chicago’s ‘One Good Deed’ blog here.

Superhydrophobic solution on the San Francisco Embarcadero

‘Lotus Affect All the Things

When I transferred to IDEO San Francisco from our Chicago studio, among the items I brought with me were a trio of spray bottles of superhydrophobic solution.

Ever working in service of promoting IDEO's maker culture — and ever looking to test the limits of our forgiveness in lieu of permission mantra — an idea came to mind regarding how I might best put them to use.

I crafted a 12' x 4' stencil, rounded up a handful of colleagues and took to San Francisco's Embarcadero with my spray bottles to craft a message visible only when it rains.

The below-linked video details our effort, drone footage and all. (Note: all of the water used for the final shot was obtained from the San Francisco Bay)

The Day I Broke the Intranet

I was barely into my second week at IDEO's San Francisco location when a particular opportunity to get to know my new colleagues presented itself. The above image was sent, location-wide, with the subject line: ‘Innovation.’

My chosen response that would set off the largest Photoshop Battle in IDEO history. I detailed the experience in an article on our site.

Two people moss graffiti stencil a wall

‘Moss Graffiti Bomb All the Things

I was invited to design a header image for IDEO’s internal ‘News You Can Use (NUCU)’ mailing. I chose moss as my medium for creation, enlisted the assistance of a colleague and crafted a living, graffiti stencil image on the north wall of IDEO’s San Francisco Headquarters.

The below-linked video details our process and effort.

Moscow Metro, October, 2015

These are the Metro stations I captured during my visit to Moscow, where I had the honor to speak at the 2015 OFFF Russia Festival; dedicated with infinite thanks and gratitude to my gracious hosts, German Kuhtenkov, Anastasia Hlushko and Roksana Borovik.

Restoring Meaning to the term, UX.

These are my thoughts about the importance that we, as an industry, be be deliberate in how we talk about the work that we do.

Specifically, in designing user experiences, we should adhere to processes that ensure we’ve arrived at an empathy for our user via an understanding of their experience; one that best equips us to design the most appropriate solution for the real world challenges our users face.

A NATO and G8 protest in Chicago in 2012

NATO Summit, Chicago, USA, 2012

On May 20 and 21, 2012, Chicago played host to the NATO summit, the first ever held in the United States outside of Washington, D.C. Tensions ran high as not all Chicagoans welcomed the presence of many controversial heads of state, both foreign and domestic.

These photos were captured on Sunday, May 20th, during an anti-NATO demonstration on Chicago’s South Side.
